About

giuseppe2I completed a Degree in Geological Sciences in 1992 at the University of Catania (Italy) and a PhD in Geological Sciences in 2001 at the University of Granada (Spain). In 2003 I was awarded a “Marie Curie” fellowship for two years post-doc research. I was made an Assistant Professor in 2005, an Associate Professor in 2009 and a Full Professor in 2019 at the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology of Granada University.

I have been teaching in the Faculties of Sciences (Degrees in Geology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences) and Fine Arts (Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage) at Granada University since 1997. From 2014 to 2018 I have been coordinating the Official Master’s Degree in “Science and Technology in Architectural Heritage”.

Most of my research work centres on the mineralogy, the physical and mechanical properties and the durability of construction and decorative materials, mainly bricks and other ceramics, but also lime mortars and sedimentary stones (UNESCO specializations: 250611, 251110, 331202, 331205). I am the head of the research group RNM179 “Mineralogy and geochemistry of sedimentary and metamorphic environments” funded by the Regional Government of Andalusia.

I am the author/coauthor of more than 290 scientific papers. These have been published in SCI journals, books, book chapters, non-SCI peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. I work as a reviewer for several international journals. I have been involved in more than 20 European, national and regional projects, working as project leader on 4 of them. I have supervised/co-supervised 9 PhD Theses and several Degree and Master’s Theses.

I was awarded by the Sociedad Española de Mineralogía (SEM) in 2001 (Young Researchers Award) and by the Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrologia (SIMP) in 2020 (Honoray Fellow).
