Francisco Lara is an Associate Professor-tenured at the Department of Philosophy I of the University of Granada. His areas of expertise are normative ethics (specifically, consequentialism) and applied ethics (specifically, duties towards animals, the moral status of embryos and human enhancement). Two of his most recent publications are the book Sufre, luego importa (with Olga Campos) and the article in the journal Neuroethics, "Artificial Intelligence as a Socratic Assistant for Moral Enhancement" (with Jan Deckers). He has been a visiting researcher at the universities of Cambridge, East Anglia and Oxford (Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics). Since 2013, he has been the principal investigator of two international research projects on the ethical aspects of the use of biotechnology and artificial intelligence for human enhancement funded by the Spanish Government.

Areas of research

New biotechnological applications to the enhancement of moral capacity, in particular, to the enhancement of empathy in psychopathic criminals.

Development and ethical analysis of a virtual assistant that, with the help of artificial intelligence systems, enables human beings to make better moral decisions.

Application of the current debate on normative ethics to the precise determination of duties towards animals.
