## Open ESR position (MAnET)

Call for applications for an ESR (Early Stage Researcher) position:

Applications are invited for a full-time ERS position (leading to a PhD degree) at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Helsinki, within the Marie Curie ITN project MAnET.

Duration: 36 months
Starting date: September 2014

Living allowance + mobility allowance:
According to the MC-ITN rules the basis for calculating the gross monthly living allowance of the recruited Early Stage Researcher is 38.000 €/year as a living allowance, plus a mobility allowance 700/1000 €/month (depending on the family status). These amounts include overheads and are subject to the applicable country correction coefficient to adjust to the cost of living of the country where the project is carried out. [In Finland this means about 3550 €/month minus taxes for an unmarried fellow.]

Mobility requirements:  According to the regulations for mobility within the Marie Curie program, at the time of recruitment by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.

For all recruitments, the eligibility of the researcher will be determined at the time of recruitment and the status of the researcher will not evolve over the life-time of a contract.

Academic requirements: Master’s degree and less that 4 years (full-time) research experience after Master’s degree.

Main research fields:  Differential geometry, Geometric measure theory, PDEs, in particular, Minimal Surfaces. The recruited fellow will prepare his/her PhD thesis on

Minimal surfaces on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds and/or sub-Riemannian manifolds

under supervision of Ilkka Holopainen. The specific topic of the thesis will be decided in accordance with the scientific background of the fellow.  The fellow will actively participate in all events organized by the network.

## Workshop on PDEs: Modelling, Analysis and Numerical Simulation

This workshop will address the lastest advances on PDEs in describing a wide range of problems on several fields (physics, biology, social sciences, …) from three point of views: modelling, analysis and numerical simulations.

We will bring together specialists from several relevant research institutions with the goal of describing different techniques and results which are being used nowadays and starting new lines of research between the participants.

## School on the geometry and physics of moduli spaces (Madrid, 19-23 May 2014)

The main goal of this school is to introduce graduate students, postdocs and senior researchers to several active fields of current research in the theory of moduli spaces and their interplay with geometry, topology and theoretical physics. The school is organized within the ICMAT Research Term on the Geometry and Physics of Moduli Spaces.

PROGRAMME
The school will consist of 4 introductory courses:

• Sergei Gukov (Caltech): From Higgs bundles to knots and 3-manifolds
• Nigel Hitchin (Oxford): Spectral curves
• François Labourie (Orsay): Cyclic surfaces and Hitchin components

## Postdoc position in Geometry at Imperial College London

### RESEARCHERS MOBILITY CALL FOR PROPOSALS – NILS SCIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY

Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) operates the NILS Science and Sustainability programme, aimed at improving and deepening the academic and research collaboration among Spain on the one side and Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein on the other. Within this programme, funded by a grant from the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area, the following open call for proposals IS launched, addressed to public and private universities and to public research organisms:

Título: Approximation and Sobolev Orthogonal Polynomials on Unit Ball
Abstract: For the spectral Galerkin method in numerical solution of partial differential equations, we need to understand the approximation by polynomials in the Sobolev spaces. For this purpose, it is necessary to study orthogonal structure of the Sobolev space $W_2^r$ that consists of functions whose derivatives up to $r$-th order are all in $L^2$. In this talk, we discuss new result on Sobolev orthogonal polynomials in $W_2^r$ for all positive integer $r$ and approximation in the Sobolev space on the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and describe sharp estimate for the error of best approximation in the Sobolev space and its application in the spectral Galerkin methods.

Sesión 12:45. Andrei Martínez Finkelshtein (Universidad de Almería)
Title: Equilibrium problems related to asymptotics of Hermite-Padé polynomials.
Abstract: Polynomials of multiple orthogonality (or Hermite-Padé polynomials) arise in many problems related to number theory, random matrix theory and stochastic processes, to mention a few. It became clear recently that understanding their asymptotic is crucial for solving many open problems in these areas. It is well-known that the logarithmic potential and in particular, equilibrium measures, provide the description of the leading term of asymptotics for standard orthogonal polynomials. However, the situation is much more difficult and less clear for the Hermite-Padé polynomials, where the general theory is still to be created. I will explain some ideas about the vector equilibrium for these polynomials, based on the work of Gonchar, Rakhmanov, Aptekarev and others.

## Geometry Day 2013

As in previous years, the Research Group Problemas variacionales en Geometría (FQM 325, Junta de Andalucía) organizes the Geometry Day. The 2013 event will be held in the morning of next December 13 at the IEMath-GR (main conference room).
