We have a new project entitled: Wetlands and reservoirs as drivers of Carbon and Nitrogen Cycles. Climatic Implications. HERA (CGL2014-52362-R) supported by Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad and EU-Feder.

HERA is a project to determine concentrations and fluxes of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, and N2O) and volatile exchangeable dissolved organic carbon in saline wetlands (marshes and endorheic lakes) and reservoirs. These ecosystems are prevalent and well integrated in the agricultural landscape of the South of the Iberian Peninsula as well as in the interface land-ocean. However, these ecosystem types (marshes, endorheic lakes and reservoirs) can differ substantially in their greenhouse gas budgets being sink or sources and, consequently, in their contributions to the atmospheric warming. These budgets may have seasonal and across-system variabilility and, then, it is necessary to determine accuretly this magnitude and their main drivers to assess their role as regulators.

We will pay an special emphasis to methanogenesis in oxygenated waters and denitrification linked to guano inputs by flamingos.
