ETHICS AND POLITICS OF MEDICAL DEVELOPMENTS FOR HUMAN ENHANCEMENT

PUBLICATIONS ATTENDANCE AT CONGRESS

One of the most interesting debates in contemporary applied ethics discusses whether it is right or not to use the recent advances in biomedicine and convergent (nano-bio-info-cognitive) technologies not only to cure human beings but to enhance and optimize their physical and cognitive abilities, their mood or the extension and quality of their life. But this debate is often set in a very simple and speculative way. This project intends to outline a sophisticated decision making model including, among other things, an ethical analysis closer to the peculiarities and the technological potential of each enhancing area; the knowledge of the impact that every enhancement may have for our (socio-political, evolutionary and existential ...) images on the future of humanity; and the potential contribution to the model from the main theories about social evaluation of the (bio) technologies. Once such a decision making model is outlined we will study its applicability to understand and to solve the controversies on the enhancement of human beings using biomedical techniques
