Members of our research group have published in media the latest results of the research project we are carrying out on the beneficial effects of melatonin in muscle damage prevention and fiber composition restoration in «Diabesity». To increase the global reach of this news and to be able top disseminate our results to the entire world society, we have translated the press release into several languages and you can access them by clicking on each of the versions indexed below.
On December 20th 2024, our research group attended and participated in the V Symposium on Advanced Therapies and Biomedical Technologies (ibs.GRANADA). In it, the group presented 2 poster communications one by our PhD student Diego Salagre and Master student Clara Rubio. The title of both communication were: 1.-«Organelle-Molecular Mechanisms of Muscle Non-Shivering Thermogenesis in Response to Melatonin in Obese Diabetic ZDF Rats», and 2.-«Melatonin activates human skeletal muscle calcium-dependent thermogenesis in vitro: role of melatonin receptor 2».

Members of our research group have been interviewed by the television channel Canal Sur for the science communication program ConCiencia. There, they have spoken about their latest advances in their research on melatonin and its benefits for the prevention of obesity and diabetes focusing on thermogenic tissues (adipose and skeletal muscle) as a promising therapeutic target to combat this pandemic.

Our Research Group Mr. Diego Salagre has participated in the 3 minutes thesis (3MT) competition with his talk entitle: «I have a dream» and been awarded with the first prize. The final was celebrated in Granada March 18th and Diego will represent the University of Granada in the european final phase with other researchers from the Coimbra Group.
Our Research Group Director Prof. Dr. Ahmad Agil has participated in the Diabetes Update with Scientific Evidence Workshop celebrated in Jordan 27th December 2023 organized by the Jordaninan Ministry of Health and the European Comission with his talk entitled: “Control obesity and aging by food ingredients and Life Style. Turn on the heat”
Our Research Group Director Prof. Dr. Ahmad Agil has participated in the World Food Security Conference celebrated in Tunisia 19 and 20th December 2023 organized by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO). He was honored by His Excellency, the General Director of the ALECSO during the events of the World Food Security Conference in the Arab countries during and after the crisis because of his talk entitled: “Control obesity and aging by food ingredients and Life Style. Turn on the heat”
Our Research Group will host a talk entitled “Diabetes management beyond HbA1C” by the visiting Professor Dr. Amjad Al-Shdaifat and it will be hold at the Biomedical Research Center (CIBM – http://cibm.ugr.es/) of the University of Granada (www.ugr.es/en/) the 11h of November 2023 in CIBM-Conference Room.
The European Researchers’ Night is a Europe-wide public event, which displays the diversity of science and its impact on citizens’ daily lives in fun, inspiring ways.
This year, the event took place in 26 countries on Friday 29 September 2023, including Granada, Spain where our research group made an interactive informative talk with examples as mini-experiments. We talked about the growing problem of obesity in our society and how thermogenic mechanisms, which physiologically are responsible for thermoregulation, are a promising therapeutic target. The different types of adipocytes that we can find as well as their functions were shown with experiments, being brown fat a thermogenic target (as well as muscle). Subsequently, we talked about how to induce this thermogenesis through healthy lifestyle habits: doing sports, sleeping well (importance of melatonin), balanced nutrition (importance of nutraceuticals), etc.
The European Researchers’ Night aims to
This international event attracts each year more than 1.5 million visitors in Europe and beyond.

On July 18, 2023, our research group participated in a divulgation video of the neuroscience institute Federico Oloriz commemorating the year of the neuroscientific Santiago Ramón y Cajal. In it, the group presented his research line and his scientific activities. Found attached in the next link the video.
On June 6th, our research group received a visit from the students of the School of Nursing of Trnava (Slovakia) within the Europroyectos Erasmus+ Plan (Spain). In this visit, the students acquired experience and competences in biomolecule analysis in the laboratory as well as important techniques for diabesity research.

On June 26, 2023, our research group attended and participated in the XIII Reunión de Jóvenes Farmacólogos de Andalucía (RJOFA). In it, the group presented 3 poster communications and one oral communication, the latter being carried out by our PhD student Diego Salagre and obtaining the award for best oral communication in Metabolism. The title of this communication was «Melatonin improves obesity by inducing SERCA-SLN uncoupling and mitochondrial biogenesis via AMPK/PGC1α in both gender Zucker Diabetic Fatty rats».
