In addition, we also characterized floral phenotype of both cytotypes.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-382 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/wpd.ugr.es\/~evoflor\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig.S2_FINAL_20170804-1024x507.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpd.ugr.es\/~evoflor\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig.S2_FINAL_20170804-1024x507.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpd.ugr.es\/~evoflor\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig.S2_FINAL_20170804-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/wpd.ugr.es\/~evoflor\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig.S2_FINAL_20170804-768x380.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We found a clear geographic pattern in the distribution of cytotypes, with diploid individuals occurring in the southernmost part of the distribution range, while tetraploids were found in the northern area. A contact zone between both cytotypes was identified but diploid and tetraploid individuals very rarely occur in sympatry. In this contact zone, both cytotypes grow at different altitudes, mean temperatures and precipitation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-383 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/wpd.ugr.es\/~evoflor\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig.6._AllVars_Allregions-1024x735.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpd.ugr.es\/~evoflor\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig.6._AllVars_Allregions-1024x735.png 1024w, https:\/\/wpd.ugr.es\/~evoflor\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig.6._AllVars_Allregions-300x215.png 300w, https:\/\/wpd.ugr.es\/~evoflor\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fig.6._AllVars_Allregions-768x551.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Diploid and tetraploid populations clearly differ in corolla tube width and stalk diameter, and importantly depends on precipitation and temperature. In addition to climate, several soil variables also explained the geographic distribution of cytotypes, according to our niche models.
