María José García Encinas received her Ph.D. from the University of the Basque Country in 1999. Her thesis was a defence of singular causation within the framework of trope theory. In 2000-2002, she was awarded a postdoctoral grant from the Basque Government to visit the Philosophy Department at Rutgers University where she became interested in questions concerning identity and general metaphysics. She came back to Spain as a Ramón y Cajal Researcher (a tenure track position) at the Philosophy Department of the University of Granada (2002-2007). She is now an Associate Professor-tenured at the same department.

Areas of research

Her main area of expertise is Metaphysics: categories and modal knowledge. In particular, her research focuses on causation, properties, relations, identity, and personal identity. She is a trope theorist and a singularist concerning causation. She holds a pre-doxastic non-conceptual view on categorial intuition and a sort of narrative approach to personal identity. She is also interested in the study of the History of Philosophy. Since January 2017, she is the General Editor of the journal Theoria: An International Journal for Theory, History, and Foundations of Science.
