Project researchers participate in the international conference “Reproductive politics in the Atlantic space”
On September 24 and 25, the Institute of Contemporary History (INZ) is hosting the international conference Reproductive politics in the Atlantic space: advances (and reversals) from the postwar period to the present in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The conference brings together researchers from different disciplines to examine, from a comparative perspective, the development of reproductive politics and sexual and reproductive rights from the postwar period to the present. It focuses on how these rights were defined, claimed, institutionalized, and contested in different contexts, addressing both advances and setbacks as well as the connections between different national experiences.
Two researchers from our project are participating in the conference with two presentations:
- Agata Ignaciuk (University of Granada, History of Science / Gender Studies) is participating in Panel 5: “Framing Reproductive Rights within Socialism”, with the paper “Artificial” Miscarriage: “Old” and “New” Abortion Technologies in Communist Poland.
- María Mundi-López (University of Granada / School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences, Paris) is participating in Panel 7: “Abortion Technologies and Access”, with the paper Medication Abortion: (Co)productions of Knowledge at the Crossroads of Medical, Militant and Lay Practices (1980–2020).
The conference brings together different historical experiences from Europe and beyond to explore continuities and ruptures in struggles for reproductive rights, as well as the connections between diverse political, social, and healthcare contexts.
The conference is being held in Ljubljana, a particularly relevant setting given Slovenia’s history of reproductive rights struggles, from the period of socialist Yugoslavia to the present.
