About the smoothness question for the Riemannian Monge problem

We will consider the Monge (optimal transport) problem with quadratic cost function and smooth positive assigned probability measures on a closed Riemannian manifold. We will discuss what a smooth solution of that problem should look like, relying on a variational argument. We will indicate a PDE method to construct such a solution and state some recent existence results.
