Groundwater represents a strategic resource, especially in areas with a Mediterranean climate characterized, among other things, by prolonged periods without rain during each dry season and by the impact of recurrent droughts. Consequently, surface water from rivers and reservoirs is scarce or even absent for long periods. However, while surface water is well-characterized and measured, groundwater poses a challenge as it is neither visible nor easily accessible, requiring specific study techniques. The objectives of this working group are, therefore, to contribute to the development of knowledge about groundwater in terms of its quantity, quality, and the effects of anthropogenic activities on both aspects. Ultimately, the aim is to provide a service to society by improving the availability of water resources in an area with significant needs.
The group is composed of researchers from the University of Granada who have developed their work in numerous aspects related to the research, management, and development of methodologies for the in-depth study of groundwater. Over the past decades, numerous research projects and contracts have been carried out to support public administration and private companies with practical objectives aimed at assisting society in one of the most critical issues of our time: water.
Our vision is to advance knowledge, study techniques, and applications of aquifers and the groundwater they contain, in order to address the challenges demanded by society.
