Estimados colegas y entusiastas del estudio interdisciplinario:
El Grupo de Investigación HUM 404 HERMEKATE y el Departamento de Filología Griega y Eslava de la Universidad de Granada (España), se complace en anunciar la 1ª edición del Congreso Internacional «Magia y Pensamiento».
Nuestro objetivo es reunir a científicos, investigadores y profesionales de diversas disciplinas en la histórica ciudad de Granada, del 24 al 26 de abril de 2024 para comunicar, debatir y compartir los últimos avances en la investigación sobre el fenómeno histórico y cultural de la Magia. Este será un espacio para lograr una comprensión holística del papel de la magia en la historia del pensamiento humano, abarcando aspectos racionales, metafísicos, artístico-literarios y socioculturales. Esperamos generar conversaciones que iluminen las diversas maneras en que la magia ha moldeado nuestro entendimiento del mundo.
Agradecemos de antemano su interés y esperamos recibir sus valiosas contribuciones.
El creciente interés cultural por las creencias, clases y prácticas mágicas se evidencia en la abundancia de estudios filológicos y antropológicos sobre el tema. Hasta ahora la investigación se ha centrado en aspectos concretos que arrojan luz sobre su naturaleza y significado, entre ellos se han estudiado los textos y ritos de magia, sus mecanismos psicológicos y las poéticas. Sin embargo, aún no se ha profundizado lo suficiente en el papel de la magia en la historia del pensamiento humano, la cultura, la sociedad, las ciencias y las artes.
Según M. Bajtin, «lo mágico unió en sí todo lo que más tarde se convirtió en influencia artística y conocimiento científico… y gracias a ello surgió una vida de imágenes rica y profunda».
El congreso ofrecerá una perspectiva única sobre el desarrollo del pensamiento filosófico y su relación con lo sobrenatural De especial interés esanalizar la pervivencia de lo mágico en el Folclore y la Literatura y las Artes plásticas, las formas de representar y explorar el mundo mágico en las distintas narrativas y teatro. Resulta también interesante profundizar en aplicaciones básicas actuales como la magia de prestidigitación cuyos valores didácticos, que desafían las percepciones a través de trucos e ilusiones, estimulan la imaginación y fomentan la capacidad para pensar de manera no convencional.
La magia en la sociedad contemporánea es otro aspecto que se desarrollará en las sesiones del congreso.
Invitamos a académicos y profesionales de diversas disciplinas — incluyendo, pero no limitado a, Filología, Filosofía, Estética, Antropología y Ciencias Cognitivas— a contribuir con sus perspectivas a este estudio de la magia.
A partir de los objetivos planteados, hemos dividido los contenidos del congreso en cuatro secciones, siendo la sesión plenaria la encargada de abordar las cuestiones teóricas relacionadas con la comprensión de la naturaleza de la magia.
SESIÓN PLENARIA «Hermenéutica y Contexto de los estudios sobre la Magia y la Astrología«. Esta sesión está dedicada a recoger los antecedentes del estudio sobre la Magia y Astrología. Se trata de temas fundamentales: el nacimiento de los estudios sobre la magia y las diversas perspectivas metodológicas y conceptuales sobre su origen y naturaleza, y abarca desde los hallazgos de la Prehistoria, ritualidad chamánica y creencias populares hasta las formulaciones textuales en Occidente y Oriente. Se analizarán las relaciones que se han establecido entre Magia, Mito y Religión y pensamiento científico-racional.
PANEL I: “Dimensiones Mitológicas, Religiosas y Filosóficas de la Magia”
El panel ofrece una plataforma para la exploración científica y el análisis de las prácticas mágicas y filosofías que hunden sus raíces en la magia. Se trata de análisis interpretativo del arte prehistórico y su posible función en contextos rituales y mágicos, buscando comprender el papel que jugaban en las sociedades que los crearon. A través de un enfoque analítico, se pretende arrojar luz sobre la influencia y el significado de las doctrinas místico-esotéricas en distintas culturas y épocas. Se adentrará en la exploración de las doctrinas metafísicas que tienen sus cimientos en prácticas mágicas, tales como el magnetismo natural, y la hermenéutica teosófica de la Magia. Se valorará la persistencia de la creencia en la magia a través de la lente de los pensadores clásicos y modernos que han investigado la esencia y la influencia de la magia en los fenómenos naturales. Abordaremos la introducción de la magia en la filosofía especulativa desde la antigüedad clásica hasta nuestros días: se examinará la evolución histórica del pensamiento racional sobre la magia y el ocultismo.
El análisis se centrará en cómo la razón puede ser una herramienta para desentrañar los principios operativos de la magia considerada como una fuerza sobrenatural que actúa sobre la naturaleza.
PANEL II «La dimensión estética de la Magia»
Se centra en la presencia de la magia en el arte a lo largo del tiempo, desde el arte rupestre prehistórico hasta la pintura y escultura moderna. Se abordarán temas cómo la magia ha influido y persistido en diferentes formas artísticas que contribuyen a las estéticas de misterio y trascendencia. En cuanto a la manifestación del pensamiento mágico en las artes visuales, se proponen como objeto de estudio imágenes y representaciones de rituales y objetos mágicos en la pintura. De especial interés es asimismo la pervivencia de lo mágico en el arte escultórico en las obras de artistas como Auguste Rodin y Alberto Giacometti que exploran temas existenciales y metafísicos, asociados a la magia y la espiritualidad. Los estudios lingüísticos sobre la magia se centrarán en los estereotipos, signos y alfabetos mágicos. Este panel tiene asimismo como objetivo investigar el papel desempeñado por la magia en la génesis de obras literarias y el tratamiento literario de la magia. Se exploraría los principios básicos de la magia como artes de la ilusión y prestidigitación, expresiones cinematográficas que incorporan elementos mágicos simbólicos. Se hará hincapié en la dimensión didáctica de la magia ilusionista para dilucidar el valor del “pensamiento mágico” para el desarrollo de la creatividad en la educación infantil.
Los discursos sobre el papel de la magia en la subcultura musical urbana asimismo son bienvenidos.
PANEL III. La magia en la sociedad contemporánea: aplicación del análisis racional contemporáneo al estudio de la magia en la actualidad
Se introduce a la explicación que la ciencia moderna hace de prácticas y creencias mágicas, la relación entre el conocimiento esotérico y el conocimiento científico, la realidad versus la ilusión. Se explorarán los mecanismos neuronales que están detrás de la ilusión y la percepción Enfocaremos el estudio de la interacción entre la magia y la salud mental a través de lentes antropológicas, sociológicas y psicológicas, examinando cómo el pensamiento mágico perdura en diversas prácticas terapéuticas. Desde una perspectiva antropológica, reflexionaremos sobre el impacto de la magia en la vida diaria, analizando el significado de rituales, hechizos y símbolos mágicos, y su conexión con la interpretación de la realidad, la causalidad y el poder personal. Consideraremos cómo estos elementos operan dentro del tejido de las relaciones sociales, tomando en cuenta las contribuciones de Stanley J. Tambiah y Marcel Mauss, así como interpretaciones contemporáneas que abordan las predicciones personales y las visiones escatológicas. La psicología
proporcionará herramientas para entender y contextualizar racionalmente los efectos de la magia.
Finalmente, reflexionamos sobre cómo conceptos de magia y lenguaje influyen en la tecnología contemporánea. Por ejemplo, el lenguaje de programación puede verse como una forma de «hechizo» que crea realidades en el mundo digital.
Cada módulo desglosado a continuación proporciona una inmersión en la relación multifacética entre la magia, la religión, la filosofía, el arte y la ciencia,ofreciendo una visión integral que es crucial para la comprensión de su papel en diversas disciplinas y culturas.

SESIÓN PLENARIA: «Hermenéutica y Contexto de los estudios sobre la Magia y la Astrología»
Ponencia inaugural
Temática: Historia y análisis de los estudios sobre la Magia y la Astrología y su pervivencia en la cultura humana.
PANEL I: “Dimensiones Mitológicas, Filosóficas y Místico – esotéricas de la Magia”
Módulo 1: Magia en discursos religiosos
• Politeísmos (hinduismo, sintoísmo, cultos africanos, amerindios y siberianos)
• Monoteísmos (judaísmo, cristianismo, zoroastrismo, budismo e islam).
• El Folclore mágico
Módulo 2: Magia en la Prehistoria y las Doctrinas Místico-Esotéricas
• Hermenéutica del Arte Rupestre y Móvil
• Teúrgia: Examen de las prácticas rituales teúrgicas y su influencia en la invocación y la relación con lo divino.
• Religión Astral y Astromagia: Análisis crítico de cómo las culturas antiguas relacionaban los eventos celestes con los terrenales a través de la magia y sus implicaciones en las prácticas religiosas.
• Cábala y Sufismo: Investigación sobre las manifestaciones mágicas en estas dos corrientes místicas, destacando su simbolismo y prácticas espirituales.
• Gnosticismo: Valoración de los sistemas gnosticos y su cosmovisión esotérica como caminos hacia la salvación.
• Hermetismo: Estudio de las enseñanzas herméticas, poniendo especial atención en su papel en la perpetuación del conocimiento oculto.
• Taoísmo: Inspección de las doctrinas taoístas, su conexión con prácticas mágicas y su búsqueda de la armonía universal.
Módulo 3: Doctrinas metafísicas basadas en las prácticas mágicas
• Neoplatonismo: Examinaremos cómo esta influente escuela de pensamiento antiguo concibe la relación entre el mundo físico y el reino de las formas, particularmente en lo que respecta a la práctica mágica
como medio de unión con lo Uno.
• Teosofía: Discutiremos el movimiento teosófico y su búsqueda por sintetizar la filosofía, la ciencia y la religión, poniendo especial énfasis en las contribuciones de figuras como Éliphas Lévi, Helena Blavatsky,
Rudolf Steiner, Annie Besant, y la interpretación contemporánea de Giorgio Agamben. Analizaremos cómo estas personalidades han influidoen las prácticas mágicas modernas y su relevancia en la metafísica
actual.
Módulo 4. Hermenéutica filosófica de la Magia
• Pensamiento Clásico: Se revisará cómo la magia fue entendida y conceptualizada en la antigüedad, incluyendo la interpretación de textos clásicos y su significado en el contexto de las sociedades que los
produjeron.
• Filosofía Contemporánea: Se examinará el tratamiento de la magia en la obra de filósofos contemporáneos como Giordano Bruno, cuya obra tocó la relación entre magia y ciencia; Arthur Schopenhauer y su tratamiento del ocultismo y la voluntad; y Friedrich Nietzsche, entre otros, investigando cómo sus ideas pueden ser interpretadas en términos de un conocimiento esotérico y mágico.

Dear colleagues and enthusiasts of interdisciplinary study: The HUM 404 HERMEKATE Research Group and the Department of Greek and Slavic Philology of the University of Granada (Spain), is pleased to announce the 1st edition of the International Congress «Magic and Thought». Our goal is to bring together scientists, researchers and professionals from various disciplines in the historic city of Granada, from April 24th-26th 2024, to communicate, discuss and share the latest advances in research on the historical and cultural phenomenon of Magic. This will be a space to achieve a holistic understanding of the role of magic in the history of human thought, encompassing rational, metaphysical, artistic-literary and socio-cultural aspects. We hope to generate conversations that illuminate the diverse ways in which magic has shaped our understanding of the world.
We invite you to send your submissions by January 31st 2024 to the address congreso.magia@ugr.es. Contributions will be accepted in English and Spanish.
In special cases, papers in other languages will be considered. Attached to this call for papers, you will find an informative letter and the registration form required for the process. We will notify you of our decision on February 15th 2024 and, at the same time, we will provide you with the registration details. The growing cultural interest in magical beliefs, types and magical practices is evidenced by the abundance of philological and anthropological studies on the subject. So far, research has focused on specific aspects that shed light on their nature and meaning, including the texts and rites of magic, their psychological mechanisms and poetics. However, the role of magic in the history of human thought, culture, society, science and the arts has not yet been sufficiently explored. According to M. Bakhtin, «the magical united in itself everything that later became artistic influence and scientific knowledge… and thanks to it a rich
and profound life of images emerged». The congress will offer a unique perspective on the development of philosophical thought and its relationship with the supernatural. Of special interest is to analyze
the survival of magic in folklore and literature and the visual arts, the ways of representing and exploring the magical world in different narratives and theater. It is also interesting to delve into current basic applications such as prestidigitation magic whose didactic values, which challenge perceptions through tricks and illusions, stimulate the imagination and encourage the ability to think in anunconventional way. Magic in contemporary society is another aspect that will be developed in the congress sessions.
We invite scholars and practitioners from a variety of disciplines – including, but not limited to, Philology, Philosophy, Aesthetics, Anthropology and Cognitive Sciences – to contribute their perspectives to this study of magic.
Based on the stated objectives, we have divided the contents of the congress into four sections, the plenary session being in charge of addressing the theoretical issues related to the understanding of the nature of magic.
PLENARY SESSION «Hermeneutics and Context of Magic and Astrology Studies».
This session will be devoted to collecting the background of the study of Magic and Astrology. It deals with fundamental issues: the birth of magic studies and the various methodological and conceptual perspectives on its origin and nature, ranging from prehistoric findings, shamanic rituality and popular beliefs to textual formulations in the West and East. The relationships that have been established between Magic, Myth and Religion and rational-scientific thought will be analyzed.
PANEL I: «Mythological, Religious and Philosophical Dimensions of Magic».
The panel offers a platform for scientific exploration and analysis of magical practices and philosophies rooted in magic. It involves interpretative analysis of prehistoric art and its possible function in ritual and magical contexts, seeking to understand the role they played in the societies that created them. Through an analytical approach, it aims to shed light on the influence and meaning of mystical and esoteric doctrines in different cultures and periods. It will delve into the exploration of metaphysical doctrines that have their foundations in magical practices, such as natural magnetism, and the theosophical hermeneutics of
Magic. The persistence of belief in magic will be assessed through the lens of classical and modern thinkers who have investigated the essence and influence of magic on natural phenomena. We will address the introduction of magic into speculative philosophy from classical antiquity to the present day: the historical evolution of rational thinking about magic and the occult will be examined. The analysis will focus on how reason can be a tool to unravel the operating principles of magic considered as a supernatural force acting on nature.
PANEL II «The Aesthetic Dimension of Magic».
It focuses on the presence of magic in art throughout time, from prehistoric cave art to modern painting and sculpture. It will address themes such as how magic has influenced and persisted in different art forms that contribute to aesthetics of mystery and transcendence. As for the manifestation of magical thinking in the visual arts, images and representations of rituals and magical objects in painting
that contribute to the aesthetics of mystery and transcendence are proposed as an object of study. Of special interest is also the survival of magic in sculptural artin the works of artists such as Auguste Rodin and Alberto Giacometti, who explore existential and metaphysical themes associated with magic and spirituality.
Linguistic studies on magic will focus on magical stereotypes, signs and alphabets.
This panel also aims to investigate the role played by magic in the genesis of literary works and the literary treatment of magic. It would explore the basic principles of magic as the arts of illusion and conjuring, cinematic expressions that incorporate symbolic magical elements. Emphasis will be placed on the didactic dimension of illusionistic magic to elucidate the value of «magical thinking» for the development of creativity in early childhood education. Discourses on the role of magic in the urban musical subculture are also welcome.
PANEL III. Magic in contemporary society: application of contemporary rational analysis to the study of magic today.
We plan to introduce to modern science’s explanation of magical practices and beliefs, the relationship between esoteric knowledge and scientific knowledge, reality versus illusion. The neural mechanisms behind illusion and perception will be explored. We intend to approach the study of the interaction between magic and mental health through anthropological, sociological and psychological lenses, examining how magical thinking endures in various therapeutic practices. From an anthropological perspective, we will reflect on the impact of magic on everyday life, analyzing the meaning of rituals, spells, and magical symbols, and
their connection to the interpretation of reality, causality, and personal power. We will consider how these elements operate within the fabric of social relationships, taking into account the contributions of Stanley J. Tambiah and Marcel Mauss, as well as contemporary interpretations that address personal predictions and eschatological visions. Psychology will provide tools to understand and rationally contextualize the effects of magic.
Finally, we reflect on how concepts of magic and language influence contemporary technology. For example, programming language can be seen as a form of «spell» that creates realities in the digital world.
Each module as broken down further down, provides an immersion into the multifaceted relationship between magic, religion, philosophy, art and science, offering a holistic view that is crucial to understanding its role in various disciplines and cultures.

– Neoplatonism: We will examine how this influential ancient school of thought conceives of the relationship between the physical world and the realm of forms, particularly as it relates to magical practice as a means of union with the One.
– Theosophy: We will discuss the theosophical movement and its quest to synthesize philosophy, science and religion, with special emphasis on the contributions of figures such as Éliphas Lévi, Helena Blavatsky, Rudolf Steiner, Annie Besant, and the contemporary interpretation of Giorgio Agamben. We will analyze how these personalities have influenced modern magical practices and their relevance to metaphysics today.
Module 4. Philosophical Hermeneutics of Magic
