Title: Applications of minimal surfaces to geometry and topology of 3-manifolds, I.

Speaker: Yevgeny Liokumovich, University of Toronto.

Abstract:

Minimal surfaces are a key tool in the study of geometry and topology of 3-manifolds. In the first talk I will give an overview of several problems that can be resolved using the existence and regularity theory of minimal surfaces:

  1. two problems in 3-manifold topology: Smale conjecture on diffeomorphism groups of lens spaces and Waldhausen conjecture on the finiteness of Heegaard splittings;
  2. two conjectures of Gromov on the geometry of 3-manifolds of positive scalar curvature: Urysohn width conjecture and the existence of a short closed geodesic.

In the second talk, I will describe some of the proofs in more detail.

The seminar will also be streamed at Zoom virtual room 1.
