Cristina López Rojas, one of our Bilingualism Matters UGR team members, participated recently in the semifinal of the 3 Minute Thesis contest at the University of Granada. In this contest, participants must present the objective of their thesis and its results to a non-specialized audience in an informative, engaging way, in a maximum time of 3 minutes! Under the title “A reminder: bilingualism makes a difference”, the researcher took us on a tour of the different concepts covered in her doctoral thesis. We invite you to watch her presentation below or through this link (starts at minute 53).

Here are some answers to the questions we asked Cristina in a mini-interview.

¿Qué te pareció la experiencia de 3MT? What did you think of the 3MT experience? Participating in the competition was a great challenge. Although in my third year of my PhD I have had to face many different challenges, dissemination is still an aspect of the investigation world that I haven’t touched as much. Participation in the competition entailed taking a course on communication and dissemination, organized by the International Graduate School, and this course undoubtedly allowed me to progress in my objective: dissemination.

How did it feel having to explain your research in your second language? The contest rules require you to give the monologue in English. At the beginning this was one of the aspects that scared me the most. Explaining your thesis in 3 minutes is not an easy job, and even less so if you do it in a language that is not your maternal tongue. However, as the weeks went by, I realized that this was just a step further and little by little I gained the confidence to do it. Moreover, it is good practice because it is a situation that we are going to have to face on many occasions throughout our careers (at conferences, colloquiums, meetings…).

Did you find it difficult to write the monologue that fit within the time limit? In order to craft the perfect monologue, I went through several different phases. First I made a first draft that contained the key aspects that I had to hit in my speech: I needed to address the objective and the results of my thesis. But of course, in this first draft I included many terms that were too scientific and not very informative to a general audience. I followed the advice given to us by Carlos Centeno and Susana Escudero, who were in charge of teaching the course, “to disseminate is to renounce”. So I began to avoid terms that were unlikely to be known by everyone and I transformed those concepts into words that could be understood by anyone. Once I had what I wanted to say, I began to give it a monologue form: I included questions to engage the audience, examples of what I was saying, metaphors…. This is one of the keys to successful dissemination. We have to make the audience interested in our monologue! It’s true, doing this in the maximum time of 3 minutes was not easy. However, after a lot of rehearsal I managed to adapt it to fit perfectly within the time limit.
