Monólogo “Entendiendo el puzzle bilingüe” en la semifinal de 3MT // “Understanding the bilingual puzzle” monologue in the 3MT semifinal
Teresa Quesada, investigadora del equipo de Bilingualism Matters UGR, quedó tercera en el concurso 3MT en la Universidad de Granada. En este concurso, los participantes exponen de forma divulgativa, a una audiencia no especializada, el objetivo de su tesis y los resultados de la misma. ¡En un tiempo máximo de 3 minutos! Bajo el título “Understanding the bilingual puzzle”, la investigadora expuso el objetivo de su tesis y mostró parte de los resultados y algunas conclusiones preliminares.
Teresa Quesada, one of our Bilingualism Matters UGR team members, was awarded third place in the 3 Minute Thesis contest at the University of Granada. In this contest, participants must present the objective of their thesis and its results to a non-specialized audience in an informative, engaging way, in a maximum time of 3 minutes! Under the title “Understanding the bilingual puzzle” the researcher talked about the aims of her doctoral thesis and some results and preliminary conclusions.
Aquí os dejamos las preguntas que le trasladamos a la protagonista y que amablemente ha querido compartir. Here are some answers to the questions we asked Teresa in a mini-interview.
¿Qué te pareció la experiencia de 3MT? What did you think of the 3MT experience?Creo que fue una experiencia muy enriquecedora. El taller de preparación previo a participar en el concurso fue muy útil ya que aprendí aspectos esenciales sobre la divulgación científica. En un principio parecía imposible el poder presentar tu tesis en tres minutos, pero después de este taller, no solo eres capaz de hacer la presentación en 3 minutos, sino que también lo haces de una forma divulgativa y abierta a un público amplio. Además, es maravilloso conocer a compañeros de otras disciplinas y compartir nuestras investigaciones de una forma simple y entretenida.It was a rewarding experience. The seminars prior to the competition were very useful, as I learnt basic aspects related to scientific dissemination. Presenting my thesis in three minutes initially seemed impossible, but after the preparation seminars, not only did I present my thesis in three minutes, but I also did it in an accessible way to a wide audience. Additionally, it was wonderful to get to know colleagues from other fields and share our research in a simple and entertaining way.
¿Cómo te sentiste al divulgar tu investigación en tu segundo idioma? How did it feel having to explain your research in your second language?La verdad es que me sentí cómoda haciendo la presentación en mi segundo idioma. Lo cierto es que solemos presentar nuestra investigación en inglés y por tanto no supuso un gran reto. Si que es verdad que el tiempo es un factor clave en esta competición y tiendes a correr para poder expresar todas las ideas en el tiempo dado. Al estar hablar en mi segunda lengua, sí que es más difícil el poder hablar rápido, pero a la vez claro. To be honest, I felt comfortable while doing my presentation in my second language. We usually present our research in English so it was not a great challenge. However, time is a key factor in this competition and one tends to speak fast in order to say all the ideas in the time limit. As I was doing it in my second language, I found it difficult to speak faster while being clear.
¿Te resultó difícil escribir el monólogo y ajustarlo al tiempo? Did you find it difficult to write the monologue that fit within the time limit? Sí, ambas cosas me resultaron difíciles. Especialmente difícil fue escribir el monólogo porque yo tenía las ideas muy claras y pensaba que se entendían perfectamente, pero cuando les conté a mis compañeros mi investigación (supuestamente de una forma divulgativa), no entendían nada de lo hacía. Por tanto, di muchas vueltas y tuve que cambiar el foco por completo para hacerlo más accesible al público general. Ajustarlo al tiempo también fue complicado, pero al final se trataba de simplificar y quitar detalles técnicos que no eran relevantes para el público al que me dirigía.Yes, both things were difficult. In particular, I found it difficult to write the monologue because I had some clear ideas about what I wanted to say and I thought that the public would understand them perfectly. However, it was not the case when I told my colleagues my research and they couldn’t understand what I was doing. So, I thought about it a lot and I completely changed the way I was telling my research. Fitting the presentation to the time limit was also difficult, but it was a matter of simplifying and avoiding technical issues that were irrelevant for the target audience.
