I will consider an elliptic problem in 1D which involves a parameter-dependent, piecewise-constant weight that changes sign. By using phase-plane techniques and a time-map analysis, we can obtain a quite precise description of the number of positive solutions according to the values of the parameters of the weight. In addition, the qualitative structure of the bifurcation diagrams can be established. These results have been obtained in collaboration with Guglielmo Feltrin (Univ. Udine, Italy) and Elisa Sovrano (EHESS, Paris).
