On 20 April 2022, Cristóbal Lozano and Teresa Quesada, two members of the BM UGR team participated in the “Science Days” at the Asunción School in Granada. The aim of these seminars was to present science to secondary school students in an accessible and entertaining way.

Cristóbal and Teresa visited two classes of secondary education and showed the students that scientists do not only investigate physics or chemistry, but can also investigate language. In addition, there are other scientific instruments other than microscopes or test tubes to investigate. In fact, our team showed how we can investigate language with experiments using just a computer.

The students were the protagonists of these sessions as they were our “experimental subjects”. They carried out several experiments and reflected on what happened in each of them. At the end of the session, they were able to corroborate the importance of investigating something as apparently simple as language and understood that it is key to understanding how the bilingual mind works.

Have you ever wondered how people learn a foreign language? At the Universidad de Granada (Spain) we are investigating how people use their native language and how they acquire a foreign language. To investigate this, we are creating a large database (called ‘linguistic corpus’). We are looking for native and non-native speakers of different languages. In return for your participation, you will get to know the level you obtained on the grammar test (when you participate as a learner of the language). Additionally, if you are interested, we can send you a document from the University of Granada acknowledging your participation.

Conferencias Científicas de EventEX // Scientific Conferences with EventEX

Investigando lenguas: Científicos sin probetas // Investigating languages: Scientists without test tubes

Jorge Montaño y Elena García-Guerrero, both members of the ANACOR project and Bilingualism Matters UGR team, participated in this year’s edition of the EventEX scientific conferences. Given that the event aims to promote scientific education, the speakers presented topics related to their field of research to a non-specialized audience. Under the title of “Investigating languages: Scientists without test tubes”, their presentation dealt with the phenomenon of bilingualism and the relevance of linguistic research in today’s society. We invite you to watch the presentation in its entirety:

Here are some of the questions we asked our researchers:

Preparing a brief speech for a non-specialized audience can be a challenge. How was your experience? Had you ever participated in this type of activity before?

We’re not going to lie, it was a bit complicated. When we started working on the topic of our speech, we were pretty sure that we wanted to introduce and present the idea of investigation in linguistics (how we work, what we do, etc.). However, we saw how hazardously easy it was for us to introduce concepts and ideas that, while for us are basic concepts of our research, are difficult for a non-specialized audience to understand properly. Also, since we had never participated in this type of activity before, the challenge was even greater. But by making an effort and dedicating time to our goal, at the end of the day we managed to make it come together. We just hope you like our video and get to know a bit more about what a linguist can offer!

The bilingual phenomenon allows for an interesting perspective when studying different linguistic elements. As linguists, what type of studies can you conduct with bilinguals?

Bilingualism is a really complex phenomenon and that’s why it is studied not only by us linguists, but also in other scientific domains, such as psychology. In our case, we mostly carry out comparative studies between speakers of a single language (monolinguals) and bilingual speakers, so that we can see how both groups behave linguistically and analyze the factors that come into play to cause these differences.

We do not focus exclusively on bilinguals’ linguistic production, but also on their linguistic processing and interpretation in real time conversations. From there, we try to see how similar bilinguals are to monolinguals in their processing, or if they have characteristics unique to themselves.

Why is Granada such a perfect place to study bilingual linguistics?

Granada is one of the most multicultural cities in Europe. Every year, many international students travel here to study, with many of them taking classes at the University of Granada. This makes Granada the perfect place to investigate bilingual phenomenons, due to how it’s population at any given period is filled with people with a wide variety of linguistic, social and cultural backgrounds.

Do you work with a particular type of bilingual population?

In linguistics, it is possible to work with any type of bilingual speaker, but in our case, we work with the so-called “late bilinguals.” These are people who started learning a second language after childhood. The learning tends to take place during puberty or as an adult. The key aspect to this kind of bilingualism is having already acquired the mother tongue completely when the second language learning begins. The term “late learner” or “late bilingual” may sound strange, but the truth is that many of us (in Spain) belong to that category because we began to study English, for example, in middle school or in high school.

If you had to summarize your talk in two ideas, what would you highlight?

It’s important to emphasize that the fact that there is an enormous variety of bilingual speakers. It’s easy to think that a bilingual person is someone who speaks two languages, but the reality is much more complex. In fact, there is more homogeneity between monolingual speakers of the same language than between bilingual speakers.

I would add that in our talk we try to demystify the typical image that comes to mind when we think of a researcher. Science should be able to reach all levels of society and, for that to be feasible, we still need to break away from several old-fashioned ideas. Among them, we hope that people understand that wearing a lab coat is not a requisite for doing research. Linguistics is also a scientific field of study and it allows us to research key aspects of life such as language.
