TeC-FiloLab con Cristina Corredor: «Normative definitions in the public sphere, political participation and authority in illocution»

Normative definitions in the public sphere, political participation and authority in illocution

In many cases, written norms (laws, regulations, policies, etc.) issued by a political authority define and so fix the meaning of certain terms that were already in use (for example, ‘violence against women’, ‘rare disease’, or ‘terrorism’.) The question arises who is entitled to participate in democratic political consultations oriented to formulate those norms. The notion of authoritative illocution (following Langton, 1993) can be fruitfully applied to the analysis of political deliberative processes of fixing a definition where entitlement to participate is related to the identities of the interlocutors. My aim is to argue for the view that those who will result directly affected by the norm and whose experiences have been shaped by the events and conditions, etc. being defined have not only political legitimacy but also epistemic authority to contribute to such definition.
