Crecer con dos idiomas. ¿Qué puede pasar? // Growing up with two languages. What can happen?

On the 7th of June, Bilingualism Matters UGR went to Luna elementary school to give a talk to parents of the young pupils. In their presentation titled “Growing up with two languages. What can happen?” Daniela Paolieri and Ana Díaz-Negrillo debunked the myths of bilingualism and spoke about the realities of growing up bilingual.

While the parents were learning about bilingualism, the children enjoyed a multilingual story telling event organized by our BM UGR colleagues Antonio Iniesta and Marta Rivera as well as several visiting students from the United States (Maggie, Rose, and Bridget) and Italy (Francesca). Although the children were taken aback at first upon hearing other languages, they were entertained by the story telling and were surprised that they could understand it in other languages.

At the end of the session, we asked the children to draw their interpretation of “Bilingualism”. Most decided to draw their bilingual parents. Others thought they would make the task of learning languages a bit easier by drawing a machine that makes languages. It was a great experience and we hope to return soon.
